High speed satellite internet came as a blessing for those in areas where only dial-up was available. It brought a lot of advantages for individual users and for small companies also. Although it might be a little pricy than dial-up connection, it is far more reliable than this one and the download speed is significantly increased. However, many people have also heard about VOIP and want to use it also. Unfortunately VOIP and high speed satelite internet don’t really go one with another.

VOIP is the abbreviation for voice over internet phone and it is tempting to be used because it saves a lot of money. Long distance calls as well as international calls area lot cheaper if using VOIP. It also comes with some free features that most people find useful, such as caller ID or voice mail. The thing about VOIP is that it can only be used if you have a strong and reliable internet connection. Otherwise, if your internet connection keeps on failing, for instance, you might experience pretty serious trouble with VOIP. Even though high speed satellite internet is reliable form this point of view, it is its latency that prevents users from benefiting of VOIP. The time that passes until the signal gets to the satellite and back might be unnoticeable when just surfing the Internet, but it can cause serious inconvenience when having a conversation in real time. High speed satellite internet is also possible to fail, when there is stormy weather and that will lead to the fact that you won’t be able to use VOIP at all, not even for emergency phone calls.

There are indeed providers that claim that VOIP can be used with high speed satellite internet, but customers need to be cautious with these kinds of offers because they might be less reliable than promoted.
